Our Patron saint was an embodiment of virtues of head and heart. It is commonly said that “Patience is a virtue.” A very patient and deliberate man, St. Francis de Sales most certainly led a life of great virtue and holiness. Francis de Sales always made sure he knew who he was: a child of God destined to serve God with all the gifts and talents given to him by God. He says it perfectly, ’Be who you are, and be that well.” Let’s not stress and agonize about all our flaws. Let’s embrace them and live fully in God’s glory!
St. Francis de Sales was born on August 21,1567 at Savoy, France. Encouraged by his father to become a lawyer, he instead entered the priesthood after convincing his family that ministry was his true calling. St. Francis was filled with love for God and for the men, women, and children he was surrounded by. He devoted his time to spiritual direction of lay people, which was extremely unusual for the time. At a time when it was believed that a person had to withdraw from life to a contemplative setting to become holy, Francis taught that holiness can be achieved in everyday life. The path consists in using each person’s unique God given gifts to the best of his or her ability and for the Glory of God. He died on 28 December, 1622. In 1923 Pope Pius XI named him the patron saint of writers.
